Don't get me wrong, I think you're onto something innovative here. It's
the right way to solve the problem -- to unify several interfaces
(bookmarks, url entry, autocompletion) with a single, better one.
I just wonder how long it will take people to figure it out (I've been
reading Alan Cooper lately). The concept modifies the existing mental
model, though I suspect it is consistent with what people may expect as an
extension. At least I can see myself discovering it and saying: "Aha,
that is so cool!"
What would be useful is some way to migrate mental models to that *aha!*
state more quickly. Something like an icon, label, tooltip, suggestion in
the urlbar, or machine-telepathy that could suggest to the user that they
can access bookmark/categories in that widget.
