Try running epiphany from the console. If you're getting something like:
(epiphany:8142): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: file gdk-pixbuf-io.c: line 729
(gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file): assertion `filename != NULL' failed

...then do a 'make install' (hope you've got your prefixes right). I've
just installed cvs head and so far it runs perfectly with mozilla
snapshot 20030305 ('about:' says 1.4b).

I'd say don't give up just yet. You'll thank yourself later :)
