Maybe I should add this one to the FAQ.
Proxies are set session-wide in Gnome, so you could either use
gnome-network-preferences (Menu -> Preferences)
or gconftool (in a terminal):
gconftool-2 --type=string --set /system/http_proxy/host PROXY_URI
gconftool-2 --type=int --set /system/http_proxy/port PROXY_PORT
gconftool-2 --type=bool --set /system/http_proxy/use_http_proxy true
(Replace PROXI_URY and PROXY_PORT with your proxie's values)
