Epiphany not listening to external apps

When I click a link in, for example, liferea, Epiphany usually opens a
new window at this URL. My problem is that this stops working
sometimes: I open Epiphany, open a few windows, and then following
links from external apps stops working.
To the best of my experimenting, it seems to be to do with
username/password dialogues (eg, 'The proxy server you have configured
requires authentication'). When I submit these dialogues,
communication stops working.
Are there any known fixes/workarounds for this, short of manually
copying the URL into Epiphany? (I'm running Ephy 1.8.0 against Firefox
1.5 Beta 1 - could upgrading either of these help any?)
