Unable to connect to session bus: Unable to determine the address of the message bus

After an apt-get upgrade on a Ubuntu Dapper system I can't start
Epiphany:

$ /usr/bin/epiphany --version
Gnome epiphany-browser 1.9.5.1

$ /usr/bin/epiphany

to determine the address of the message bus

** (epiphany:5826): WARNING **: Unable to get proxy for DBus's s bus.

** (epiphany:5826): WARNING **: Unable to get DBus proxy; aborting
activation.

DBus is running:

$ ps auxww | grep dbus
103       5805  0.0  0.1   2104   740 ?        Ss   18:51
0:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system

What gives?
