You are totally right: nobody wants to receive this crap.
Note that these spam messages have been sent to many Gnome mailing lists, so
I am sure the Gnome sysadmins are working on it at this very moment. Also
note that the sender abuses the mail address of innocent people, who
regularly post legitimate mails, so blocking based on email address is not
going to help.
