Try running evolution-mail in a separate terminal before starting
evolution, with the environmental variable CAMEL_VERBOSE_DEBUG set to 1.

This will print out any dialogue with the server - it could be a
protocol problem.

It could also be a locking problem, you need to run evolution-mail in
gdb, and get a backtrace when it hangs.
