I guess i would start looking at the system printing utilities or gnome-print.
e.g. what is the default printer, etc.
can you setup a gnome/evolution printer which prints to a command, and just put 'lp' into the command, for example? i can't remember what the dialogues look like.
as a workaround there's always printing to a file option, as inconvenient as that might be. saves trees perhaps ...
