Many thanks for your response. I think 'I' count as "pure sarge"
It's the one operating system here and was installed on a hard drive I'd
completely erased when partitioning ready to installing sarge.
The
evolution -c mail
suggestion I had from Marcel Schepers gets Evolution going there are a
few 'camel warning's (intriguing phrase!) but the client seems to work
all right.
Thanks again
Godfrey

The key item with work-arounds is:
libgal2.4 version 2.4.2-1 (etch's) is buggy.
But libgnomecanvas2-0 version 2.8.0-1 (sarge's) did not use libgal2.4,
that's why the bug disappeared when downgrading.
Also, if you have libgnomecanvas2-0 version 2.10 (etch and sid's),
and libgal2.4 version 2.4.3-1 (sid's), it works fine.
So, the work-arounds for this bug are:
* downgrade libgnomecanvas2-0 to sarge's version (2.8.0-1)
* upgrade libgal2.4 to sid's version (2.4.3-1).
Once libgal2.4 2.4.3-1 has entered etch, you can have an up-to-date etch
without this bug.
However, if you are pure sarge you shouldn't be seeing the new, buggy library, so your problem may lie
elsewhere.
