If any of the Evolution background processes have started before you install the EWS package, they will need to be restarted. Since gnome-shell tends to load evolution-calendar-factory as soon as you log in to GNOME, it's fairly much guaranteed that installing EWS and then trying to use it immediately, under GNOME, is going to fail. I think there was a bug for this once, but I don't recall it now.
Does the wrong order damage anything, such as my ability to try again and get the order right 2nd time.I do not think so. The only drawback is that it seems impossible to configure evolution to connect to Exchange which is hidden behind microsoft's proxy server, with RPC over HTTP "technology". Your Exchange needs to have public IP address or name.
