it can't be that big of a deal if after 6 years, only 1 person (you) has
complained about it.

You'll also note that the thunderbird bug was submitted in 2003 and
still "not fixed" and only has 1 or 2 users who actually care (again
suggestive that it's not a big deal).

Thunderbird will still default to [Fwd: %s] unless the user changes it,
according to the bug.
