<Space> seems excellent for next; many programs use space for a
pause/unpause function in slideshows, music playback and the like.
I think <backspace> would not be a great idea because of the potential
confusion with delete. (In fact, I just noticed that on this
particular keyboard, backspace is actually labeled as "delete" and the
"delete" key is labeled "del".)
As "next" is maybe more common than "previous" perhaps <space> for
next and <shift><space> for previous ?
