My bad. I based that comment on the incorrect assumption that the URI
would point to (or at least use) a locally mounted filesystem.

Well, I forgot to account for roundtrip latency... Which is also why I
wrote "Generating...". Ping across the atlantic lands at 30-200ms for
me.
And my current thinking is that the other parts of F-Spot will continue
using the local SQLite database. The syncing runs in the background
without disturbing the user (unless there is a conflict). Though I'm not
sure how the rest of the F-Spot code will react to that kind of
treatment, it is possible that approach is hard to implement well in the
current F-Spot codebase.

What about the case of not generating the thumbnails using the regular
mechanism? From what I understand this is a step backwards (so it's
probably not an awesome idea), but applications can save thumbnails to
the user-wide thumbnail cache themselves, so theoretically they could be
fetched from the server, saving loads of bandwidth. Still, probably more
trouble than it's worth.

I think I could tolerate it, but it would be a nice thing to have
