Lorenzo,  thanx it worked for me

the only problem was that fc-cache was looking for libfontconfig.so.1 in
/usr/lib instead of ~/garnome/lib so i made a symbolic link and it
worked.

But I still got this message:

(gedit:15955): Gtk-WARNING **: Whoever translated default:LTR did so
wrongly.


Anyone know what is it?  How do I fix this?
