With my lengthy explanation with scary commands like `ldd` I was hoping I'd make the impression that I'm not a total newbie. ;-)

But nevermind, as somebody else reports (last post), I DO have AA fonts in the splash screen (or so it seems): http://news.gnome.org/gnome-news/1017545398/1017746666/index_html

Then I thought this might be a language/locale issue so I set my locale to "C" but to no avail. As I said before, I'm by no means the only one with this problem and I'm happy to do some further testing.
