GCC 2.96 (RH 7.2) internal compiler error

GCC whines about compiling testgtk.c, reporting an internal error (?!)
... haven't tweaked anything about the GARNOME package except to change
the installation directory (I wanted everything in /usr/gnome2).

I'm hesitant to try and get GCC 3.0.4 working, having heard horror
stories about binaries doubling in size and execution time ... should I
try? (Has GCC3 improved in this regard since 3.0.1?) If so, anyone have
any tips on installing GCC3 alongsize GCC2 on RH7.2?
