gcc compile error

My attempts to install Gnome with garnome 0.18.3 fail
on this error message :
checking for gcc... cc
checking for C compiler default output...
configure:error: C compiler cannot create executables
make[5]:***[unix-def.mk] Error77
what would it be ? a package missing ? who could give
some information on how to solve this problem?
