Hi,

On one of the virtual terminals (Ctrl+F2, Ctrl+F3,...) login as the 
user you were trying to start garnome as and do ....
 tail -f ~/.xsession-errors 
to see the continuous errors for your current session.

Or if you are the root too, do a...
 tail -f /var/log/messages
to see all the system wide errors being generated.

These may hint at something ;)
