GLIB2 won't compile, libiconv errors

After reading the announcement of the new version of GARNOME on
gnomedesktop.org, I decided to give it a chance. So I created a new
user-account, booted up a nested X-session, downloaded and untarbz2'd
the installer-package, cd'd to meta/gnome-desktop, and did a 'make
install'. First it complained about the lack of openjade (and OpenSP),
so I downloaded and installed them (system-wide, in /usr). 

But after a couple of minutes of downloading and compiling I got the
following error while compiling glib2:

Note the 'gconvert.c:46:2: #error GNU libiconv not in use but included
iconv.h is from libiconv' line.

Some info about my system:
- Slackware 9.0
- Kernel 2.4.20 (not the default slackware-kernel)
- SMP system (dual celeron 333 w/ 512 MB)
- Dropline GNOME installed
- 12 GB free on home partition
