I am a complete amature on this but..
one option is that you are compiling without write permission, try as
superuser with enviroment preservation ( su -m before you compile) has
worked for me in similar situations.
else you lack some essential piece of program or library / dev file, read
through ~/main.d/gnome-system-monitor-2.0.4/config.log to get an idea of
what is missing. what happened right before it stopped ? :-)
