I think I'm almost there....

Ok, I was able to get past the xrender and render issues I was
receiving.... and then, thanks to a reply to my post, I found that I
needed to have the X/Gnome development libs available... and now, for
my, hopefully, last trial...

after about 30 minutes of anticipation in trying to install 2.4, I get
this error:
