rh9 gdm not loading

i installed garnome and when i restarted my rh9, the gdm could not load. 
there was a prompt from x asking me if it should reconfigure. i said yes 
and now nothing loads and the screen sometimes flashes the text log-in 
screen for a few seconds and then flashes out. what files do i need to 
edit if i use linux recovery?
