Out of curiosity... If you don't especially enjoy compiling software and
fiddling with it, why on earth would you choose LFS? :-)

It sounds like the libsmbclient library wasn't installed into /usr/lib
or wherever LFS puts libraries. You need more than the header files in
/usr/include to be able to link to the library.

It sounds to me like your samba install isn't complete. Maybe
libsmbclient is something you can choose specifically to build and
install?

Other than that I have no ideas.
