Font problems: Cannot open font file...

Hello All,

I just wanted to follow-up on the two messages:

I recently downloaded the Garnome2.8.0 and successfully compiled it too.
(some initial dependency problems, which I resolved in the mean time ;)

But when I start GNOME, it segfaults. In the first few runs it was
complaining about 'Bitstream Vera'. Then I searched the archives of this
list and found some references to this problem. Then I copied my
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf to $GARNOME/share/fonts and then it started
complaining about 'URW Bookman'. Out of frustration, I added all
available fontpaths to my /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and created a symlink to
this directory in $GARNOME/share. Now its complaining for 'Nimbus Sans
L, 10'. :(

I've checked the output of fc-list and this is what I get:

I think I'm missing out something simple and something that may have
been discussed in this mailing list before.
