Actually I just checked and you're right, there is a checksum cmd. I
guess since there really is no need to call it from the cmdline, I just
forgot about it.
If you need to grab the tarballs before you run a 'make paranoid-
install' then you would probably be better off either downloading all
the tarballs that you need into a dir and pointing GARCHIVEDIR in
gar.conf.mk to it or using the 'make garchive' cmd. This is covered in
the FAQ section:

2.3 Can I download all the GARNOME components at once?
You only really need desktop/ platform/ and a few things in bootstrap/
to have a working install. Most of the other dirs are just there for
people to play with if they want.

LOL... :)
I also have a question for you. Does Debian not provide a firefox
package at all? It seems from the thread that you posted, that the issue
was whether Debian could provide a modified/patched version of firefox.
I don't see any reason why they couldn't just provide a pristine version
of firefox like most other distros until/if the issue is resolved.
I know that Fedora doesn't provide a -devel package for firefox yet so
Fedora users have to compile firefox in GARNOME as well. Also, most
older distros don't provide firefox so there are a lot of people who
have to compile firefox in GARNOME if they want to compile epiphany. But
the reason we leave bootstrap/firefox commented in epiphany is:
- A lot of people already have a binary package of firefox installed and
usually remove epiphany from desktop/ anyway
- Firefox is not part of GARNOME
- It takes a long time to compile it and hence it would increase the
compile time for most people
