Well, the link to the standard description as mentioned in Joseph's
original post should be a good starting point...

$GARNOME/share/applications should be the place for system wide menu
entries. Seems, they are displayed with a 'Categories' value provided
and 'NoDisplay=true' omitted. ;-)
I assume, this actually is $XDG_DATA_DIRS/applications. As
$XDG_DATA_DIRS really takes multiple : delimited paths, adding some more
(like your distro ones) should do it. Just a thought though, I did not
test this yet.
Regarding personal menu additions: $XDG_DATA_HOME/applications maybe.
This is just a guess, though.
