I appreciate the tips. I eventually tried creating a new user and
building/running garnome locally from that account. (I wanted to be sure
there were no lingering configuration issues.) This too had the same
exact problem, with nautilus and gnome-panel failing.
I have since given up, and re-installed a newer distro to bring myself
more in date, and I will be trying garnome 2.10 again in the near future.
