Please subscribe to mailing lists, before posting. Thanks. (Also, for
an yet unknown reason mailman stopped sending moderator requests, so I
didn't even notice this for a while...)

Known issue with GARNOME 2.14.2, fixed in 2.14.2.1. Please see the list
archive for an easy way to fix this:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/garnome-list/2006-July/msg00051.html
Some notes on versions:
* GARNOME 2.14.2.1 has been released on June 1, one day after 2.14.2,
just to correct this issue. You should have downloaded the latest
version. :)
* At this point, GARNOME 2.14.3 is the latest version with a lot of
fixes. Released 2 days ago.
Also, if I do understand your remarks correctly, you downloaded tarballs
manually, to build them with GARNOME. There s no need to do this.
GARNOME will download them for you automagically.
If you want to do the bulk of the download at a given time, have a look
at the documentation on our project page [1]. Especially the 'fetch'
target will be useful here -- or even better the 'garchive' target, if
you set the GARCHIVEDIR variable in gar.conf.mk. HTH
