Hmmm... That  would be the problem.  

I build firefox before any of the GNOME applications, which is why I did
not have the same problem.

There is scripting foo in a number of the GAR makefiles that is supposed
to afford the option of using a distro version of a gecko engine rather
than building the GARNOME firefox.  Looks like it is time to review that
code.
