if you are already using GConfClient in GConf1, the amount of work is
minumum, since the API has not changed.

I just had (in libgda) to switch to GConfClient from GConfEngine (not
allowed in GConf2 if you're already using GConfClient, which is what
libgnome/ui uses), but that was all.
