Yes, you can tel gdm to run a program to obtain the username. If you want that the username be the same as the host name, you may do:
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf:
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=/usr/local/sbin/autologin.sh|
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=/usr/local/sbin/autologin.sh|
TimedLoginDelay=30
/usr/local/sbin/autologin.sh:
#!/bin/bash
HOSTNAME=`echo ${DISPLAY} | cut -f1 -d: | awk -F . {' print $1 '}`
if [ "x$HOSTNAME" != "xlocalhost" ] ; then
echo $HOSTNAME
fi
