this is the problem. Do you have a package like 'gnome-common' like on 
debian? Is there a gnome-libs-devel. You need gnome.m4 and friends (copy 
them to ./macros and all should work again.) Since this is 
non-standardized on gnome-1 and every distribution is different, and I 
don't have RH at hand ... I can only guess.

Perhaps disabling GETTEXT support (C options) or gnome support 
(whichever you don't need) will help.
