Something like
export GTK_MODULES=gail:libgail-gnome
/usr/libexec/at-spi-registryd
should just work.
In Ubuntu the registry is located in a different directory; I cannot
confirm if it is the right way, but if it is, for Ubuntu you will
have to change the path to:
/usr/lib/at-spi/at-spi-registryd
