Thomas and Glenn:
One think that you could look at is "gnome-speech", which is a
text-to-speech service front-end for GNOME which is used by the
gnopernicus screen reader (and other sample screen readers, etc.). We
don't have a dectalk backend for it yet but I think a simple dectalk
backend should present no difficulty. You can get gnome-speech from
GNOME CVS as module "gnome-speech". At the moment gnome-speech has
support for eloquence and festival, and support for FreeTTS is planned
in the near future.
Perhaps you'd like to help us write the serial dectalk backend?
