Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I used this xinitrc
file:

and startx sent this to stdout, omitting the standard dozen lines
at the top that identify the version of X and the meaning of the
various marks:

As I said, I am not sure at what point this report
starts responding to my shutdown request
(ctrl-alt-bksp)
How should I test the speech, in addition to running
"festival --server" in one text console, running
"festival_client" in another, and issuing a "SayText" command to
the client? When I do that, the server talks to me, and the
server's stdout confirms that the client was recognized and
accepted.
