Just a note on your post:

I'm not aware that /opt is a Linux standard usage at all. You might want to check against the Linux Standards Base at http://www.freestandards.org, but
I believe this is more a Solaris usage, and not a Linux usage.

So, "against the grain" would not be an appropriate criticism.
