What one has to remember is that when you start an X session, it creates a
new virtual console and status messages appear on the console you started
X from. For example, if you have 6 virtual consoles to start with,
starting X will create a console on tty7 and that's where Gnome and any X
applications are running. The status messages are going to come on the
console you started X from. So, to get back to your X session, switch to
console 7 using the example. Of course, if you only had three virtual
consoles, you would find X on tty4. The best way to find out how many
consoles you have is to look at /etc/inittab and see how many agetty
processes are invoked on what consoles. Note that you might be using
mingetty instead of agetty as Redhat does. Hope this helps.
