On my Redhat 8.0 system, gcc -v yeilds

gcc version 3.2 20020903 (Red Hat Linux 8.0 3.2-7)

I certainly don't want to run software that I am testing with root 
privileges, and I suspect that wouldn't solve the problem anyway.
