Hi. I honestly don't know. I thought the gnome-speech config looked
for the ECIINI environment variable, but I am still getting the ViaVoice
gnome-speech server compiling even after I remove the var. Since
ViaVoice crashes on my system, I don't want it to compile.
About the only thing I can suggest is to make sure your ECIINI points to
the file generated when you ran the inigen program that comes with
ViaVoice. For example, I told the inigen program to put the eci.ini
file in my home dir. I added the line
export ECIINI=/home/kennyhitt/eci.ini
to my .bash_profile. You might want to take a look at the eci.ini file
to make sure the paths to the ViaVoice libs are correct.
I don't know what distro you are using, so you might want to ignore the
rest of this. I am using Debian unstable. The c++ libs were upgraded
after Woody (Debian stable). Because of the upgrade, I don't think the
ViVoice package will work on my system. The problem is because Debian
testing and unstable use a newer version of gcc for all binaries.
Aparently, binaries compiled with the earlier versions of gcc will have
problems running on the system. Friends running Redhat 9.0 have the
same problem. We've tried everything we can think of to get it working,
but none of us have had any luck. I also use alsa on this system, so
either the alsa drivers or the newer libs could be my problem.
I bought the DECtalk software synth. The gnome-speech driver has bugs,
so until someone fixes them it isn't usable. I think I understand the
problem, but I haven't learned enough yet to fix it.
I'm sorry I can't be more help.
