Adam,
I had the same problem. In my case, it seemed to have something to do with
hanging Gnopernicus. I use brltty, which operates through a serial port,
but brltty was stopped also, so I couldn't use the keys on my braille
display to change consoles or anything. Ultimately I had to press the
reset button.
That X server is pretty powerful if it can hang Linux. I thought the
kernel forbade any process from doing this. Some work is needed somewhere!
