Well, I reverted to using a tarred version of gnome
2.4 I had from another installation to get gnome 2.4 up and running on my redhat
enterprise advanced server 3.
I untarred the setup into /opt/gnome-2.4, modified
my environment to point to it and tried startx.
The results... nothing is spoken. it did work on
the earlier installation, so I know it is my setup somehow.
I saved the output from startx into a log file and
it looks like this:

GTK Accessibility Module initialized xinit: connection to X server lost. My .orbitrc file looks like this:
ORBIIOPUNIX=1
ORBIIOPIPv4=1 And before you ask, yes I did enable accessibility using the following
script:
