always great. Tom, you were very
perceptive, the problem was more complicated. Gnome did not load correctly because it could not resolve the hostname of my dhcp. I am connected to the internet via a wireless card using dhcp. The problem is that the dhcp changes every day. Yesterday my root prompt looked like this: root dhcp-533-13 and to day it is root dhcp-531-23 . Thus I have to change the line correspponding to the local host in the etc/hosts. I am afraid I have to edit this file every day, or else, I should find another way of doing it so that gnome will be able to resolve the hostname automatically.
