Try a different gnome speech client. I vaguely remember using Orca for a
long period of time, and DecTalk didn't crash then, however that was a
while ago now. I would have to try it again.

I am pretty sure it is Gnopernicus, and not gnome speech. If you can,
try orca. I am yet to work out how to get it to work with GNOME 2.8 due
to it trying to initialize itself twice.
