Hi Cody,
No that should work if you have Gnome 2.x installed. If not you can try to
get a sighted user to help you go to the top gnome panel, click System >
Preferences > Accessibility Support and check the box that says "Enable
Acccessibiltiy Support" and "Turn on Screen Reader" on login. Then log out
and log back in. Checking that box is equivelant to running that command.
This will only needed to be done once, and gnopernicus should be reading
gnome data at every login. If you use the GDM login manager you can make
that accessible with a short-cut key sequence. This is described in the
Accessibility Guide. Hopefully you will have a working environment at that
point.
I have found that using JAWS in Windows with the command window with telnet
lets me get some stuff done, such as thiss task. It does require you to be
comfortable with navigating the unix file structure and commands.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I am afraid I have not used SuSE before, so someone on this list may be
able to help you more. This guide got me started.
http://www.gnome.org/learn/access-guide/2.10/ but I am afraid some of it
is outdated. The Sun folks have shared they are working on a new one for
2.12, but the full screen magnification section needs some work.
I am afraid the IBM SVDK link has escaped me. The Linux version may not
even be free or downloadable anymore. Bill has referenced the Java access
bridge which can be found
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/stable/gnome/java-access-bridge.html
What you are doing is linking the java environment to a gnome bridge so
gnopernicus can pick up on it. I have tested it on open office and it
works well.
using the following command should turn on accessibility in gnome. I am
not sure if the path has changed or not and do not have access to my gnome
desktop for another week or so...
"gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility -t bool true"
g-edit (had some problems saving with gnopernicus, as it did not read all
elements for me), all of the menu's, gnome control panels worked, etc. I
know most if not all default gnome desktop applications work with
gnopernicus. Again, I do not know what extra applications SuSE throws in
(yast for one) but exporting those modules should work for all other
accessible GTK applications. Gaim has been mentioned a couple of times,
the archive has a lot of great info. You can set your profile to export
this variable on startup so you do not have to manually do it.

Hope that helps.

hi,
thanx for all the info. I have formatted with SuSE 9.3 Pro last night.
Waht is the name of taht free ibm screen reader? Also, thanx for that
export command. As far as open office goes, I have tried to open the word
processor in gnome but gnopernicus doesn't like it, how did you get this
to work. Also, how will I know whether or not I have to export the java
or gtk or not. have you gotten it to work with yast, gnome control
center, or the k3b burning software. Can you name some aps you have used
in gnome you have used and know for sure work? Thanx a million and a
half!

Hello,
I will try to answer a few of your questions
1) I have gotten gnopernicus to speak with firefox, open-office, gnome
desktop applications. I
2) some applications written in GTK require you export the gail and atk
bridge this can be done via the command line type "export
GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge"
3)you will need to setup your java apps (aka open office) to either work
with the java bridge or a native java screen reader (IBM has a free one
I have used)
4) If you are using Ubuntu I build .deb packages for gnopernicus.
Otherwise you will need to compile your own gonpernicus packages with a
compiler. You will also require a little knowledge of building/making.
If you post your distribution you may find someone who can build it for
you.
I hope this helps.

Jason G.

sorry I hadn't posted a subject here is the message just in case
anybody had trashed my email, my bad.
hi listers,
I'd like a couple things,
1. a list of programs gnopernicus will work with.
2. What is the command to make gnopernicus work with gaim messenger?
3. If any programs require gnopernicus work by typing a command before
launching the program, what is it?
4. If anybody has gnopernicus, the latest version, I would like it, and
all its dependancies along with it. I believe the latest is 1.12.0 or
something. This in itself would be a great help from anybody
thanks
Cody
