Oliver, What release of Ubuntu are you using?
Gnopernicus 0.11.6 is on the latest Breezy preview distribution, also GNOME Speech 0.3.7.
I had problems with this version due a bug on festival synthesis driver.

This patch I think that is on CVS version of GNOME Speech. You have to build it yourself or install a GNOME Speech prior version in order to work with Festival.
