I like eSpeak. It rocks!
sudo apt-get install espeak speech-dispatcher
edit /etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf and uncomment the
espeak-generic module and make it the default. You may also wish to
comment out the festival module.
Edit the /etc/speech-dispatcher/modules/espeak-generic.conf file so that
it executes /usr/bin/espeak instead of /usr/bin/speak. You will also
want to change the VolumeAdd and VolumeMultiply factors to 100 instead
of 10.
The only other thing you may want to do is to change your default volume
in speechd.conf to 0 instead of 100, but the volume can be changed in
Orca, so this really isn't an issue.
