Try launching orca from a gnome-terminal. This is what I had to do to
resolve the same error.

I installed the necessary pyorbit package from source.
I am using Orca with a DECTALK Express and the Emacspeak speech server.
Orca now runs to the point of giving a startup message; it then
announces "switching to focus tracking mode" and "no focus". After that,
it doesn't speak at all, regardless of what keys I type.
What debugging option would you recommend?
The contents of my .xsession file:
orca &
gnome-session
