I think SuseRocks is going to send out a summary soon. But I also saved the log, please find below.
Cheers,
Pockey
(10:09:35 AM) suseROCKs: ok so in our last full-fledged actual meeting,
we discussed connecting schools with our a11y projects.
(10:09:59 AM) suseROCKs: Specifically, making universities/professors
aware of interesting projects they can assign their students to
participate in.
(10:10:16 AM) suseROCKs: davidb already has one professor interested
from U of Toronto.
(10:10:53 AM) suseROCKs: So last night, here in the channel, PockeyLam
and I held an impromptu meeting to discuss this project in more detail
and we'd like to bring our findings to the rest of the group for further
input.
(10:11:01 AM) suseROCKs: PockeyLam?
(10:11:50 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: here
(10:12:17 AM) suseROCKs: go for it
(10:12:41 AM) PockeyLam: Basically we wanted to start an accessibility
project with students involvement in China
(10:12:51 AM) suseROCKs has changed the topic to: COntribute to
http://live.gnome.org/Accessibility/GetInvolved. Meeting in progress!
Topic: University Mentorship Project
(10:12:53 AM) tac: great
(10:13:13 AM) PockeyLam: We found a few mentors already, who are Ray,
Ngao and Emily
(10:13:52 AM) PockeyLam: we are calling for students participation at
this moment (within our existing college OSS group from about 10
diffferent univerisities)
(10:14:52 AM) PockeyLam: while yesterday suseROCKs, nags, ray and I were
discussing what's the steps of proceeding this project (as we hope to
bring a project to GSoC)
(10:15:02 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs suggested the following steps:
(10:15:21 AM) PockeyLam: 1) Put out a call to all apps devs. Find out
what they need assistance on. a) A11y programs b) non-A11y programs that
don't have a11y support (maybe more focus on b?)
(10:15:21 AM) PockeyLam: 2) Develop an outline for mentoring guidelines
(10:15:21 AM) PockeyLam: 3) Those that can follow the guidelines, put
them in the queue
(10:15:21 AM) PockeyLam: 4) Develop a plan to spread the word to
universities and engage them.
(10:15:21 AM) PockeyLam: 5) Mentors start to do the work
(10:15:54 AM) suseROCKs: 6) Wake up philphoto :-)
(10:15:58 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: LOL
(10:16:02 AM) PockeyLam: philphoto: PING
(10:16:08 AM) philphoto: I'm here
(10:16:14 AM) PockeyLam: philphoto: hello ~
nagappan nags
(10:16:40 AM) suseROCKs: ok so PockeyLam is focused on activities within
China area. But we want this project to be broader and appeal to
universities worldwide
(10:16:53 AM) suseROCKs: So that's going to require extensive
networking.
(10:16:56 AM) philphoto: ah. that's where I was supposed to come in.
(10:17:26 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: actually we dont mind, it can be an
international project
(10:17:29 AM) suseROCKs: Certainly. :-)
(10:17:30 AM) philphoto: I have the interest piqued of a Princeton
professor.
(10:17:48 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: we are listening to experts
advice :)
(10:18:01 AM) suseROCKs: Does this professor deal with programming,
etc.?
(10:18:41 AM) philphoto: suseROCKs: no, but she has tenure and
connections. she believes that it's very important
(10:18:51 AM) decriptor: suseROCKs: did I miss it?
(10:19:01 AM) suseROCKs: decriptor: not at all. Pull up a chair
(10:19:08 AM) decriptor: couch work?
(10:19:17 AM) decriptor: I'd rather not move it though
(10:19:17 AM) ***suseROCKs knows decriptor was hoping to say "did I miss
it" when the meeting was over.
(10:19:25 AM) suseROCKs: decriptor: couch is fine.
(10:19:52 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: actually i also found a professor in
Paris (http://chezdom.net/blog/) who is an expert in math accessibility,
he is willing to lead a project with his students involvement about
firefox math accessibility in 2009
(10:19:55 AM) suseROCKs: decriptor: You interact in the university
world. Perhaps you can offer some insight what direction we should take?
(10:20:28 AM) suseROCKs: Hmm... "math accessibility"
(10:20:48 AM) decriptor: suseROCKs: I'm still attending :)
(10:21:06 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: MathML/Firefox Task: Look at making
MathML accessible
(10:21:15 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: from the involvement page :)
(10:21:26 AM) suseROCKs: decriptor: so what's the best way we could make
professors worldwide aware that they can assign gnome-a11y apps to their
students for dev work?
(10:21:52 AM) decriptor: suseROCKs: I can mention it to the CS
department
(10:22:26 AM) ***suseROCKs assigns decriptor to the GNOME-A11y Mentoring
Project-Marketing Team
(10:23:42 AM) suseROCKs: philphoto too! :-)
(10:23:57 AM) suseROCKs: PockeyLam: Did you come up with any ideas for
mentoring guidelines?
(10:25:06 AM) philphoto: I'll jump up & down to get the attention of
Temple U. I have connections with the U Penn computer folks as well.
they can get me to the CS department
(10:25:21 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: there are a few points that I think
it's very important like it's better to have ideas coming from
students , depends on their skills , interests and capability , we
decide the programme
(10:25:42 AM) nags: suseROCKs, the one written by Federico is really
brief, I
guess ?http://www.gnome.org/~federico/docs/summer-of-code-mentoring-howto/index.html
(10:26:21 AM) suseROCKs: PockeyLam: but, look at U of Toronto for
example. It wasn't up to student ideas. The professor contacted us
because he was looking for projects to assign to students when they
start the new semester.
(10:26:32 AM) suseROCKs: They would not have had a chance to come up
with ideas of their own.
(10:26:49 AM) nags: PockeyLam, nope, that will scatter the things some
time ;-)
(10:27:06 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: right! in our case, it's the same, i
think mentors / organizers will decide the program and then call for
interested students to involve...
(10:27:14 AM) suseROCKs: So we have to contact and spread the word to
everyone who needs assistance to define what they want out of it before
students see it
(10:27:24 AM) suseROCKs: exactly
(10:27:29 AM) PockeyLam: nags: that's true.. and frankly speaking,
students are not so motivated if we don't kick their butt here...
(10:27:48 AM) nags: PockeyLam, I agree :)
(10:27:59 AM) PockeyLam: now the question is: what the program should
be ...
(10:28:03 AM) decriptor: PockeyLam: isn't that any where :P
(10:28:46 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: hehe, i m not the mentor, actually i
found a few mentors (but unfortunately they are not available to join
the chat today. it's Ray, usually he is here)
(10:29:08 AM) PockeyLam: ngao: re u here?
(10:29:45 AM) suseROCKs: We have to give guidelines to the projects what
their role as mentors should be. We don't want them volunteering just
for free labor when they don't have any intention of following through
on mentoring.
(10:29:48 AM) ngao: PockeyLam: hello, i'm here
(10:30:06 AM) PockeyLam: ngao: hi , do u know where Ray is? or maybe u
can join our discussion, since u re one of the mentors
(10:30:38 AM) decriptor: PockeyLam: I'm not either... I'm a student :P
(10:30:57 AM) suseROCKs: decriptor: You're more than a student.
decriptor delYsid
(10:31:04 AM) suseROCKs: You're an uber-student
(10:31:28 AM) ngao: PockeyLam: i think he is attending a training
(10:31:28 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: hehe, i m not technical at all... i
am just a lady loving open source concept
(10:31:39 AM) PockeyLam: ngao: okay, so you join us then :)
(10:31:50 AM) ngao: PockeyLam: sure
(10:32:00 AM) suseROCKs: "lovely lady"
(10:32:25 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: LOL so what's yr suggestions on the
program?
(10:32:50 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: we can make it internationally :)
(10:33:08 AM) suseROCKs: We HAVE to focus first on mentoring guidelines
(10:33:51 AM) suseROCKs: then simultaneously do two things after that.
1) Send out notice to people to sign up for mentoring and 2) start
building network to spread the word to universities of the availability
(10:34:29 AM) suseROCKs: so here's an idea.... decriptor and I were
going to work on a spreadsheet to make a full list of what gnome-a11y
apps exist (and possibly outside of gnome, but on Linux too)
(10:34:54 AM) suseROCKs: if anyone is interested in joining that
project, we can make a nice list which we can then use to send out
notices.
(10:35:28 AM) suseROCKs: So PockeyLam you and me, we work on the
guidelines. okay?
(10:35:39 AM) suseROCKs: and who wants to volunteer to work with
decriptor?
(10:35:43 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: no problem
(10:36:00 AM) decriptor: I have a google doc I can share..
(10:36:25 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: i will also get emily, ray and
julien involve to make the guidelines
decriptor delYsid
(10:36:33 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: please
(10:36:52 AM) decriptor: emails
(10:37:18 AM) suseROCKs: julien? New name...
(10:38:10 AM) suseROCKs: and fyi to everyone, my contact email address
is suserocks at bryen dot com
(10:38:20 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: yes, he is a core blug member , he
is good in project management as well
(10:38:25 AM) suseROCKs: do *NOT* spell out the word 'dot' in the email
address :-)
(10:38:40 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: unfortunately he has a meeting now,
so he will join the irc later
(10:39:03 AM) decriptor: anyone one else?
(10:39:33 AM) suseROCKs: who here is registered on planetgnome?
(10:39:51 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: actually, we are starting to promote
gnome accessbility , our next presentation will be on 17th December,
there will be about 20 - 30 students attending (Julien is going to
present the concept of gnome accessibility, while ray, emily, ngao will
present the technology)
(10:40:03 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: i dont have a blog yet
(10:40:15 AM) suseROCKs: PockeyLam: That's excellent. We can all learn
from your mistakes. :-D
(10:40:28 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: you
(10:40:33 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: sure!
(10:40:35 AM) decriptor: anyone that wants to be added to the list email
me or pm me in irc sshaw at decriptor dot com
(10:40:41 AM) suseROCKs: I guess I need to get on planet-gnome then so
people can pick up my a11y stories.
(10:41:13 AM) suseROCKs: decriptor: You lucky dog! You got her email,
and I didn't. :-)
(10:41:22 AM) ngao: decriptor: what list?
(10:41:29 AM) decriptor: ngao: hi
(10:41:33 AM) decriptor: ngao: list of a11y apps
(10:41:40 AM) decriptor: lol
let's use email to exchange ideas for the guidelines later?
(10:41:52 AM) decriptor: I now know 4 people in china :)
(10:41:58 AM) suseROCKs: PockeyLam: yes
(10:42:17 AM) decriptor: ah
(10:42:23 AM) suseROCKs: decriptor: 4 down, only 1,398,484,627 to go.
(10:42:29 AM) decriptor: lol
(10:43:35 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: LOL
(10:44:57 AM) suseROCKs: ok so anything else to discuss? I'm going to
send a summary of this topic to the mailing list tmw.
(10:47:39 AM) suseROCKs: Ok, so are we ready to start the meeting?
(10:47:41 AM) davidb: wait... there is a nags AND a nagappan
(10:48:49 AM) suseROCKs: davidb: the topic is yours now :-)
(10:49:25 AM) PockeyLam: davidb: we discussed about how to start a
mentoring program, suseROCKs will send out a summary tomorrow about it,
while suseROCKs and I will work on the guidelines
(10:49:37 AM) suseROCKs: davidb: actually we were discussing the
university mentorship project. But I'm going to send a summary to the ML
tmw. I expect your input, sir!
(10:49:58 AM) davidb: PockeyLam, suseROCKs sounds awesome!
(10:50:02 AM) davidb: heh
(10:50:39 AM) suseROCKs: davidb: hows it going with that prof you spoke
of?
(10:51:08 AM) davidb: suseROCKs: i met a great student... i've connected
him with the open source OCR project tesseract
(10:51:14 AM) davidb: he's going to improve accuracy via language
modelling
(10:52:12 AM) suseROCKs: davidb: that sounds like a cool project.
(10:52:29 AM) davidb: suseROCKs: yeah
(10:52:40 AM) davidb: and we could really use better open source OCR
(10:52:48 AM) davidb: (good for solving captchas etc)
(10:52:55 AM) decriptor: did google just release some ocr stuff?
(10:53:00 AM) suseROCKs: davidb: which needs more loving, in your
opinion? a11y apps, or apps that need better a11y support?
(10:53:03 AM) davidb: PockeyLam: yeah!
(10:53:18 AM) davidb: decriptor: tesseract? that was HP but now at
google
(10:53:24 AM) davidb: maybe another one?
(10:53:33 AM) davidb: suseROCKs: both
(10:53:34 AM) decriptor: I think it was tesseract
(10:53:39 AM) davidb: ok
(10:54:31 AM) PockeyLam: davidb: so back to the mentorship program, you
have connected the student to the professor, what's next?
(10:54:54 AM) suseROCKs: no no student is already connected to the
professor
(10:55:01 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: ops, ok
(10:55:05 AM) davidb: PockeyLam: well, i'm going to play "client" and
watch his progress etc
(10:55:23 AM) PockeyLam: davidb: i see, how would you "watch"?
(10:55:38 AM) PockeyLam: davidb: being copied by every email? joining
the IRC channel?
(10:55:38 AM) davidb: code commits as well as meetings
(10:55:43 AM) decriptor: davidb: btw I created a document for collecting
a list of a11y apps
(10:55:57 AM) decriptor: its a spreadsheet in google, if you want I can
invite you
(10:56:00 AM) davidb: decriptor: oh yeah?
(10:56:02 AM) davidb: sure
(10:56:05 AM) decriptor: email?
(10:56:23 AM) suseROCKs: oh davidb would be great on that project. Yes.
(10:56:25 AM) ***davidb IMs
(10:56:42 AM) davidb: suseROCKs: if i can find time ;)
(10:56:47 AM) davidb: is it linux only?
(10:57:20 AM) suseROCKs: davidb davidb davidb, you need to get your
priorities in order, dude. :-)
(10:57:22 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: the file only have these two words:
accerciser and orca , right?
(10:57:30 AM) davidb: suseROCKs: agreed
(10:57:30 AM) decriptor: davidb: it is, but there is nothing to stop us
from creating a new column for non linux apps
(10:57:36 AM) decriptor: PockeyLam: right
(10:57:43 AM) suseROCKs: or at least open-source apps
(10:57:46 AM) decriptor: now 3 :P
(10:57:50 AM) suseROCKs: that work cross-platformically
(10:57:51 AM) davidb: well i'm fine with keeping it linux
(10:57:57 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: yeah , now 3 :)
(10:58:10 AM) davidb: where is it?
(10:58:15 AM) decriptor: davidb: might be worth creatings a second list
in their for non linux ones
(10:58:25 AM) ***davidb nods
(10:58:33 AM) decriptor: maybe to see where we are lacking?
(10:58:39 AM) davidb: oatsoft keeps a FOSS list of a11y stuff i think
(10:58:44 AM) decriptor: or maybe where an app could be extended
(10:59:05 AM) suseROCKs: the problem with all these lists and docs is we
have a hard time keeping them current.
(10:59:17 AM) davidb: http://www.oatsoft.org/Software
(10:59:28 AM) decriptor:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pf9Z4Vjn5Ub2WxdjHI2uVJw
(10:59:34 AM) decriptor: that's world viewable
(11:00:12 AM) davidb: http://www.oatsoft.org/Software/listing/Repository
decriptor delYsid
(11:00:19 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: cool~
(11:00:30 AM) decriptor: should we try to include links?
(11:00:55 AM) davidb: decriptor: can you see my addition?
(11:01:06 AM) decriptor: yes
(11:01:08 AM) ngao: decriptor: oops, just forgot the email, nevillegao
at gmail dot com, thanks :)
(11:01:11 AM) decriptor: should be just about real time
(11:01:29 AM) PockeyLam: davidb: what did you add?
(11:01:37 AM) davidb: gok
(11:01:38 AM) decriptor: ngao: invited
eheh that too
(11:01:53 AM) PockeyLam: davidb: it works :)
(11:02:01 AM) decriptor: I created multiple sheets
(11:02:02 AM) davidb: :)
(11:02:09 AM) davidb: ah yes
(11:02:10 AM) ray [~ray 61 14 130 209] entered the room.
decriptor delYsid
(11:02:17 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: yeah, linux, mac, windows
(11:02:41 AM) decriptor: some titles
(11:02:46 AM) PockeyLam: decriptor: and open solaris? ;) (just kidding)
(11:02:52 AM) decriptor: :)
(11:04:32 AM) decriptor: ok, I think everyone that I invited has the
ability to invite others
(11:04:34 AM) PockeyLam: ray: HI
(11:05:19 AM) suseROCKs: ok let's wrap up the meeting. You guys can
continue chatting if you wish
(11:05:57 AM) kaeru [~kaeru 60 53 1 30] entered the room.
(11:06:03 AM) davidb: peace out.
(11:06:07 AM) davidb left the room.
(11:06:25 AM) suseROCKs: uh oh... philphoto say it ain't so
(11:13:23 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: so you will send an email to
summarize this meeting ;) , you and I work on the guidelines for
mentorship program...
(11:13:26 AM) suseROCKs: we already did! LOL
(11:13:59 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: ops...
(11:14:08 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: embarrassed ...
(11:14:25 AM) suseROCKs: shame shame shame
(11:14:47 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: :) so how should we start the
guidelines thing?
(11:15:16 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: let me read all the links (about
mentorship program) one more time, to extract points then we exchange
emails?
(11:15:22 AM) suseROCKs: we'll read those docs that nags pointed us to
and make good bullet points
(11:15:34 AM) suseROCKs: you show them to people you're working with,
and I'll show them to people I'm working with
(11:15:39 AM) suseROCKs: and then we come up with good set
(11:15:49 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: yeah
(11:16:02 AM) PockeyLam: suseROCKs: i will talk to my team here
(11:16:17 AM) suseROCKs: ok
