It can be as hard or easy as you make it. Why do you think MacDonalds has
all those pictures on the machines for taking orders? Those pictures
with a little training get past the illiteray barrier. That's a proven
model. Most types of businesses had their own representative pictorial
signs before education beame widely available due to the public school
systems. So what does this properly mean for gnome? Pictures appear on a
screen. If a user does nothing for a while, the screen saver doesn't come
on, a voice comes on and announces possible choices as each picture is
highlighted. If gnome can detet touch, it may be able to tell the user
what picture they're touching. If the user does a certain gesture to
activate that picture, a speech dialog might announce the changes. People
in China who knew only pictorial writing were literate too in their own
way.
