Yes (if it's pertinent to your app)
Plenty of other GNOME widgets in GNOME-1.0.5x use imlib.  There's nothing 
wrong with
it.  In the next release of GNOME, we won't be using Imlib, and be using 
GdkPixbuf
instead.  I the devel branch, it already uses this.
